Brown, Delwin (2008) What Does a Progressive Christian Believe?: A Guide for the Searching, the Open, and the Curious. New York: Seabury Books.
Quick Look
Author Derwin Brown was Dean Emeritus of Pacific School of Religion and formerly Harvey H. Potthoff Professor of Christian Theology at Iliff School of Theology. He died of colon cancer in 2009. As a lay theologian equally at ease in academia and the public square, Brown was a leading national voice of progressive Christianity. He received his Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate School. The 2004 presidential election was a catalyst for much of his later work. He described waking at two o'clock the following morning "with a stunned realization that the historic tradition of progressive Christian thought and action had virtually disappeared from our public discourse." As dean emeritus in 2006, he led PSR's Progressive Christian Witness Initiative with hopes of turning the tide for 2008. |

"This welcome primer on the beliefs of progressive Christians is fashioned with Del Brown's customary clarity and perceptiveness. Informed by a deep knowledge of the Christian theological tradition, the book makes a compelling case for a liberal retrieval of the symbols of the Christian tradition." ~Gary J. Dorrien, Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Social Ethics, Union Theological Seminary

"Brown offers a contemporary theology that effectively unites rational integrity with the passionate convictions of Christian faith in a way that is deeply informed by the witness of Scripture. He expresses what's at stake for us today in our beliefs about God, Christ, humanity, the Bible, and the nature of sin and salvation. This is a prophetic, grace-filled, and profoundly pastoral book addressed to general readers." ~Jennifer G. Jesse, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion, Truman State University
